Catherine Lagopatis
Teacher of Music

The Helleno-Canadian pianist Catherine Lagopatis has appeared as a soloist and ensemble performer throughout Canada and the United States. Critically acclaimed for her “inspired musical intelligence” and “brilliance of execution“ Ms. Lagopatis builds her strikingly original programs out of a wide ranging repertoire that often features works by contemporary Hellene composers. In June, 2000, she premiered the Canadian performance of compositions by Manos Hadjidakis at Toronto’s Ford Centre for the Performing Arts. In January, 2001, she appeared at the Salle André-Mathieu in Laval as a soloist in works by Gershwin and Hadjidakis, as well as guest artist with the Face Symphony Orchestra conducted by Theodora Stathopoulos in a performance of George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue.

More recently (May 26, 2001), Catherine Lagopatis performed as both a soloist and duo pianist (with Pamela Korman) at Montreal’s Salle Pierre-Mercure where she had the distinction of introducing selected works by Manolis Kalomiris. Ms. Lagopatis will be performing as an invited guest on the island of Crete, Greece at the inauguration of The Canadian Lyceum of Greece in July 2002. Following this performance she will be conducting specialized masterclasses, ensemble workshops and private sessions for the development and advancement of pianists for The Lyceum.

Ms. Lagopatis is the recipient of the (1999) Graduate Award for Academic Excellence and Personal Distinction granted by the Hellenic Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal. She previously (1998) received the Hellenic Scholarships Foundation’s Certificate of Excellence for Academic Achievement.

Ms. Lagopatis obtained her Bachelor of Music Degree with a Major in Piano Performance from the McGill Faculty of Music (class of Charles Reiner). This was followed by a Graduate Diploma in Advanced Music Performance Studies at Concordia University (class of Anna Szpilberg).

Catherine Lagopatis is a Performer Associate in Concordia University’s Leonardo Research Project. The project is a long term collaboration between a team of research scientists, musicians, performance analysts, aspiring and world class performing artists. Supported by an international panel of distinguished advisers, the team is studying the nature of performance creativity, its cultivation and its potential contribution to human well being. The project’s “real time” field explorations are conducted live in a specially designed recital hall as well as with the study groups of artists and artist/teachers established by its Artistic Director Philip Cohen in NewYork, Chicago and Los Angeles.

Ms. Lagopatis is engaged, in collaboration with Professor Cohen and Artist-in-Residence Anna Szpilberg in an integrated program of post-graduate studies designed to further her development as a concert pianist.
