The Canadian Lyceum of Greece Code of Conduct

Introduction

Our school is a place that promotes responsibility, respect, civility and academic excellence in a safe learning and teaching environment. All students, parents, teachers and staff have the right to be safe, and feel safe, in their school community. With this right comes the responsibility to be law-abiding citizens and to be accountable for actions that put at risk the safety of others or oneself.

The Canadian Lyceum of Greece adheres to the standards of behaviour laid out by The Ontario Code of Conduct. We follow the mandatory consequences for student actions that do not comply with these standards.

These standards of behaviour apply not only to students, but also to all individuals involved in the publicly funded school system – parents or guardians, volunteers, teachers and other staff members – whether they are on school property or at school-authorized events or activities.

**The Canadian Lyceum of Greece Code of Conduct is adapted directly from The Ontario Code of Conduct, proclaimed in force September 1, 2001. For more information, see relevant legislation in The Education Act and related regulations under “Expulsion of a Pupil, Suspension of a Pupil.”

Standards of Behaviour

All members of our school community, including students, teachers, staff and parents are expected to respect and be guided by the following standards of behaviour:

1.       Respect, civility and responsible citizenship

All school members must:

·           respect and comply with all Canadian federal, provincial and municipal laws, as well as all laws of our host country and community;

·           demonstrate honesty and integrity;

·           respect differences in people, their ideas and opinions;

·           treat one another with dignity and respect at all times, and especially when there is disagreement;

·           respect and treat others fairly, regardless of their race, ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, citizenship, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age or disability;

·           respect the rights of others;

·           show proper care and regard for school property and the property of others;

·           take appropriate measures to help those in need;

·           respect persons who are in a position of authority;

·           respect the need of others to work in an environment of learning and teaching.

2.       Physical safety, Alcohol and Drugs

All school members must:

·           not be in possession of, or under the influence of, or provide others with, alcohol or illegal drugs. Physical

Aggression

All school members must:

·           seek staff assistance, if necessary, to resolve conflict peacefully.

·           not be in possession of any weapon, including but not limited to firearms;

Guiding Principles

1. All participants involved with The Canadian Lyceum of Greece – students, parents or guardians, volunteers, teachers and other staff members - are included in this Code of Conduct whether they are on school property, on school sanctioned trips, or at school-authorized events or activities.

2. All members of our school community are to be treated with respect and dignity, especially persons in positions of authority.

3. Every member of our school community is expected to demonstrate respect and responsibility as an invited guest of Greece, as they would demonstrate as a responsible citizen in their home country. Responsible citizenship involves appropriate participation in the civic life of the school community. Active and engaged citizens are aware of their rights, but more importantly, they accept responsibility for protecting their rights and the rights of others.

4. Members of the school community have a responsibility to maintain an environment where conflict and difference can be addressed in a manner characterized by respect and civility. Insults, disrespect, and other hurtful acts disrupt learning and teaching in a school community.

5. Alcohol consumption by underage minors is strictly prohibited at any time. Students who are in possession of, of under the influence of illegal drugs will be immediately expelled. Students who are of legal age to consume alcohol in Greece, and who have their parents’ written permission may be permitted to consume moderately under the guidance and supervision of The Canadian Lyceum staff.

6. Illegal drugs are strictly prohibited. Students in possession of, or under the influence of illegal drugs, will be immediately expelled and sent home at their own costs. No academic credit will be granted. The Canadian Lyceum of Greece will work cooperatively with parents and local authorities to promote prevention, and where necessary, invoke the appropriate discipline measures. Students who possess or use illegal drugs may be subject to the full consequences of Greek law.

7. Members of the school community are expected to use non-violent means to resolve conflict. Physically aggressive behaviour is not a responsible way to interact with others. The possession, use or threatened use of any object to injure another person endangers the safety of oneself and others. Students whose actions are deemed physically aggressive will be immediately expelled and sent home at their own costs.

Roles and Responsibilities

The Canadian Lyceum of Greece is made up of a community of learners, teachers, parents and friends in the host community. Every member will be treated with respect, equality, fairness and compassion, and every member is expected to fulfill his or her role and honour his or her responsibilities.

Students
Students are to be treated with respect and dignity. In return, they must demonstrate respect for themselves, for others and for the responsibilities of citizenship through acceptable behaviour.

  • Respect and responsibility are demonstrated when a student:
  • comes to school prepared, on time and ready to learn;
  • shows respect for themselves, for others and for those in authority;
  • refrains from bringing anything to school that may compromise the safety of others;
  • follows the established rules and takes responsibility for his or her own action.

Teachers and Staff
Teachers and School staff, under the leadership of the principal, maintain order in the school and are expected to hold everyone to the highest standard of respectful and responsible behaviour.

As role models, staff uphold these high standards when they:

  • help students work to their full potential and develop their self-worth;
  • communicate regularly and meaningfully with parents;
  • maintain consistent standards of behaviour for all students;
  • demonstrate respect for all students, staff and parents;
  • prepare students for the full responsibilities of citizenship.

The Principal
The Principal, takes a leadership role in the daily operation of the school.

He or she provides this leadership by:

  • demonstrating care and commitment to academic excellence and a safe teaching and learning environment;
  • holding everyone, under their authority, accountable for their behaviour and actions;
  • communicating regularly and meaningfully with all members of their school community.

Parents and Guardians
Parents and guardians play an important role in the education of their children and have a responsibility to support the efforts of school staff in maintaining a safe and respectful learning environment for all students.

Parents fulfill this responsibility when they:

  • show an active interest in their child's school work and progress;
  • communicate regularly with the school;
  • help their child be neat, appropriately dressed and prepared for school;
  • ensure that their child attends school regularly and on time;
  • promptly report to the school their child’s absence or late arrival;
  • become familiar with the Code of Conduct and school rules;
  • encourage and assist their child in following the rules of behaviour;
  • assist school staff in dealing with disciplinary issues.

The Host Community
The host community members and authorities are essential partners in making our school safer.
The Canadian Lyceum of Greece works to build deep ties within our host community of Xania, Crete and the country of Greece in order to gain the support and respect of community members for the rules of our school. We also work to develop relationships with local authorities and police to assist in guarding our safe school policy.
